THE SEVENTEENTH COLONY
OF NAÏVE AND MARGINAL ART

Exhibition from the Seventeenth Colony of Naïve and Marginal Art

With the Seventeenth Colony, Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art has celebrated a significant jubilee this year - three decades of continuous and organised gatherings of the most competent representatives of authentic phenomena in non-academic artistic scene. This event appeared as a specific continuance of resistance to academic dogmas, established in the first forms of artistic colonies, such as Vienna Artistic Brotherhood Lucasbund at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Barbizon School (1830), or the First Yugoslav Art Colony Sićevo (1905).

In the series of numerous colonies of various concepts in this region, those related to naïve art stood out, established in the nineteen-sixties and seventies such as Gathering of Self-taught Artists, Trebnje (1968), Gathering of Authentic artists, Zlatar (1972), Colony of Naïve Sculptors, Ernestinovo (1973). Among them, especially pronounced were the Colonies organized by specialized museum institutions like Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art, Jagodina.
