Brašić Janko (Serbia)

1906-1994

Brašić Janko - Gathering   Janko Brašić was born in Oparić near Jagodina and is a founder of naïve art in Serbia. His earliest works date from 1933. Besides the scenes of historical myths, anecdote-portraits prevail in his overall oeuvre. As a chronicler of his time he managed to freeze the temporariness of the old and the patriarchal for a while, thus capturing the flavour of the past in his paintings. Rustic and poetic realism is his way to express his primordial connection with the ambience.
He first exhibited on the group show organised by Yugoslav Association of Artists at Art Pavilion “Cvijeta Zuzorić” in Belgrade. In fact, it was the exhibition of portraits where Brašić showed the portrait of King Peter and a self-portrait. He had solo and group exhibitions in the country and abroad. The most significant collection of his works is in Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art in Jagodina (Serbia).
