De Almeida Ermelinda - Wonders of Rio de Janeiro

Wonders of Rio de Janeiro, 2012, acrylic on canvas, 40x60cm

She was born Fortaleza (Ceara, Brazil) in 1947. She began doing painting in 1994. She resides in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Her authentic pictorial expression is recognisable in multitude of fantastic motifs fancifully fitted into specific genre scenes. The newly created forms given in the form of unusual exotic birds, hybrid creatures and wealth of zoomorphic vegetation are not only an integral part of the decoration, but also the transition into a quite new, parallel world of the painting. Ermelinda de Almeida’s phantasmagoric world emerges within these illogical relationships between real and the order of unreal events, where artistic fancy touches the actual events, experiences and memories. That world originates from the artist’s inner psychological reality, the intuitive and often the unconscious. With her radiant canvases, adorned with rich colour ensembles and forms of authentic ornaments, this Brazilian artist glorifies the culture of her people and one phantasmagorical world viewed by a jovial childish spirit. Inspired with life and people in her environment, she portrays popular motifs: the atmosphere of a city, carnival, traditional dance, images of popular saints and other cult symbols.
She is a winner of many awards and recognitions such as Golden Palette on Salon of Students’ Centre Foundation, Rio de Janeiro, 2012, Golden Plaque at the First Art Salon of the Association of State Management, Rio de Janeiro, 2005, then Purchase Awards at Biennial of Brazilian Naïve Artists, Sao Paolo, 2014 and The Fifteenth Biennial of Naïve and Marginal Art, Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art, Jagodina, 2011 as well as Special Recognitions at Salon of Military Club in Belgrade, 2008 and in Rio de Janeiro 2009, and at The Sixteenth Biennial of Naïve and Marginal Art, Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art, Jagodina, 2013.
