Knjazovic Jan

Knjazovic Jan (Serbia)

1925-1985

He was born in Kovačica in 1925. He began doing painting in 1944.
Thematic preoccupations of Knjazovic are typical for his living ambience. As regard compositions he achieved full balance of figures. Strictly stylised forms are clearly distinguished from the dark light of the background. Knjazovic found his shape of a house, a tree, a man and animal regardless to their realistic appearance and coloured them blue, red or purple, depending on his conception. By stylisation of form and rejection of details he liberated the painting from all trivial elements, thus reducing it to pictorial relations. He modelled coloured surfaces by shading, emphasising the volume by using white contours.
