Šijaković Đorđe

Šijaković Đorđe (Serbia)

1901-1977

He was born in Cetinje in 1901. He began doing painting in 1962. Bizarre compositional arrangement of decorative emblem-like figures and figurative details are the reminiscences of Byzantine icons and folklore and programmed, we would say, conscious naïve solutions are main characteristics of Šijaković’s paintings. Each object or event from life, ambience and temptation of the artist is thus transformed into a specific symbol, metaphor, or emblem-like sign. His subject matters are taken from everyday life of Skopje and its town centre, and the most frequent motif is a human figure, alone or in a symmetric group. These motifs are placed into empty space, on the flat surface of background. The figures seem to be floating, without the force of gravitation. Thanks to carefully selected colouring, which suggests the inspiring matter, the background of his paintings becomes specific abstract landscapes.
