Sokol Jan

Sokol Jan (Serbia)

1909-1982

He was born in Kovačica in 1909. He began doing painting in 1937. In his paintings he conjured up the life of Slovak rural community by using simple pictorial handwriting. By positioning people and events in the framework of village everyday life (most often in front of the local church and old school) he made records of the moments of work, rest, festivities and mourning. As a chronicler of his time he preserved traditional ambience of Vojvodina, folklore customs and spiritual heritage of his fellow-countrymen. He was one of the first naïve artists of the so-called "Kovačica School of painting".
