Staničić Matija (Serbia)

1926-1987

Staničić Matija - Dancing Lesson       She was born in Bast near Baške Vode in 1926. From her early youth she spent her whole life in Belgrade working as a housemaid of notable people in Serbia: Ivo Andrić and later Oto Bihalji Merin. She painted in 1976-1977. She died as an anonymous painter in 1987 in Belgrade. She was buried in the crypt for the homeless. Her works were posthumously discovered, and became a part of rich treasure at Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art in Jagodina, Serbia, donated by Mirjana and Gerhard Schoenberner (the previous legacy of Oto Bihalji Merin). Matija Staničić painted her phantasies and dreams through reminiscences of her childhood, her immediate past and presence, while residing at homes of respectable people who were doing art themselves. The instinct towards self-cognition and availability of the painting material led this mysterious cleaner to multitude of authentic pictorial solutions, unrefined in expression and warm and lyrical in messages. Painting like in psychotherapy, as was the case with outsider artists worldwide, she unconsciously entered the spheres of own creativity and was sure that painting was her destiny. She did painting because her impulse made her, not for exhibiting. She never showed her works which were found in the house of the Bihaljis after her mysterious parting. This lyrical, mystical, feminine art brut reveals the fragility and hyper-sensitivity of the artist, who still had an unconscious wish that one day, somebody might find her intellect in exile.
